Wash It Away
The heat from the steam engulfs my senses, penetrating me. Every pore, every muscle, every ache is saturated and consumed by it. The rushing water drowns out the reality that lays outside the curtained wall. As my body relaxes under the warm stream my mind empties. The water drips everywhere. I watch it run down my body and into the drain below. Part of me wishes I could run with it. Run or stay hidden forever. Hidden in here amongst the slick tile walls, where all existence of the outside is masked behind the noise and the warmth. I feel protected. Worry and concern can't penetrate the wall of water rushing out of the faucet above my head. In here it doesn't matter if I am alone. It doesn't matter where I am going or where I have been. The heat and the noise wash it all away.
I wish I could hide in here forever. But like all good things, it has to end. Forced out by the demands of what lies outside, I shut the water off and step out. As I leave my haven the cold air smacks me across the face. A harsh welcome back to reality. I breathe a heavy sigh as the last of the warmth leaves me, forgotten as my mind begins to fill again.
